Penn State Hires New Women’s Basketball Coach

Pending approval from the Penn State Board of Trustees, Penn State has wrapped up its women’s basketball coaching search.

According to a Penn State athletics media release, Carolyn Kieger is set to become the next head coach of the Lady Lions. She is replacing Coquese Washington, who served as the women’s basketball head coach at Penn State for 12 years.

Kieger comes to Penn State from Marquette University where she coached the Golden Eagles for the last five seasons.

In those five seasons, she led the team to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, two Big East regular-season championships and one Big East Tournament title. Kieger was a semifinalist for Naismith Women’s Coach of the Year after the 2019 campaign.

Marquette postseason appearances the last three years are as follows:

  • 2016-17: NCAA Tournament First Round
  • 2017-18: NCAA Tournament Second Round
  • 2018-19: NCAA Tournament Second Round

Kieger is a graduate of Marquette University. She served as an assistant coach for Miami for six seasons before taking her first head coaching job at her Alma Mater.

She sports a head-coaching record of 99-64.
