A Winchester company honored its first executive director and Senator Jill Vogel for work they’ve done to open employment doors for those with disabilities.
For 45 years Northwestern Workshop has been helping those who may have the hardest time finding a job, find and keep one.
“People with disabilities and other barriers to employment deserve the attention and support that we as an organization can provide to move them into employment,” Marshall Henson President & Ceo NW works says.
The company has been working for the past ten years to push a bill that would help hold states accountable for hiring and integrating those with disabilities into the workforce community.
“Our central focus is on employment, but we also help to ensure that people with disabilities have opportunities within the community so that our community understand disability issues, and disability rights,” Henson says.
Senator Jill Vogel was honored for her leadership in sponsoring the bill in this years general assembly session that makes the state a model employer for those with disabilities.
“You appreciate how important it is and then you see the families and then you see the impact of legislation once its passed , what it means to families, and how it impacts young children and especially young adults when they have these opportunities,” Vogel says.
The company also honored its first executive director of NW Works, Susan Ireland, who had the vision to help make equal opportunities for everyone when it comes to earning a living.
“Look at the impact NW works has in this community, the young people, the middle aged people it employs and what it does for their self esteem for their self worth it gives them the opportunity to socialize, but they’re also doing real work and they are making a contribution and every person deserves that chance,” Vogel says.
NW Works even owns and operates firefly cafe and bakery in Winchester to employ and train people with disabilities. The company knows that with more support those with disabilities can become high functioning employees and citizens.
