Whitey Bulger’s cause of death released; death certificate cites “blunt force injuries of the head”

The cause of death for mobster James “Whitey” Bulger is now known after his death certificate was released.

In describing how Bulger was fatally injured, the death certificate states he was “assaulted by other(s)” and lists his death as a homicide.  It also said the incident happened in a prison cell at USP Hazelton in Bruceton Mills.  Bulger’s immediate cause of death is listed as “blunt force injuries of the head.”

Officials found Bulger at 8:21 a.m. on October 30, 2018, and they pronounced him dead at 9:04 a.m.

Bulger had just been moved to prison in West Virginia in October 2018, and he was killed the day after his arrival.  Bulger was serving two life sentences on racketeering charges.

No one has been charged in Bulger’s death.

Bulger was 89 years old.
