West Virginia National Guardsman killed in training exercise identified

SUFFOLK, VA. (WOWK) – A member of the West Virginia Army National Guard is dead after a training accident in Suffolk, Virginia. 

The West Virginia National Guard said the Sgt. 1st Class Nicholas Sheperty, 36, of the 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) from Kingwood, W.Va. suffered fatal injuries while involved in an airborne operation training exercise.

According to the Suffolk Police Department and Suffolk Fire & Rescue, they were called to an accident at the Suffolk Executive Airport involving a parachutist Wednesday afternoon. 

The call came in at 2:02 PM on Wednesday, April 18th, 2019, advising of the incident involving an adult male that was part of a military training exercise.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews provided emergency treatment to the victim and Nightingale also responded, however, Sheperty was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Sheperty was not from West Virginia but chose to serve in the West Virginia Army National Guard because of its reputation.
