Toddler found wandering in the street in Berkeley Springs leads to case of child neglect

West Virginia
A woman was arrested after a two-year-old boy was found unattended in Berkeley Springs.

Morgan County Sheriff’s Deputies say Brooke Shambaugh, 23, was charged with felony child neglect. She is the girlfriend of the child’s father. Authorities say they were called on June 25, advising a young child had been found in the middle of the street on Harrison Avenue in Berkeley Springs.

An unknown man removed the child from the street. Further investigation learned that the child left a second story apartment, went down a flight of stairs and was in the street when found.

“Has been acting as the mother for some time. The child actually calls her mommy. She was left with the child to take care of the child. He was in fairly good condition. A little bit of an abrasion to his mouth,” said Sheriff K.C. Bohrer, Morgan County Sheriff’s Department.

Shambaugh was held in lieu of $5,000 and was released. The investigation is ongoing.

Morgan County Sheriff’s Department says they’d like to speak with the man who found the child. If you may know who he is, you are asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 304-258-1067.
