Some firefighters in Berkeley County will now be paid

The Berkeley County Council approved a plan for all five fire departments to station paid firefighters beginning in 2019.

The county will hire two 40-hour firefighters that will be paid almost $38,800 and recruit seven 56-hour firefighters that will be paid about $44,800 yearly salary to work at the Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Department year-round.

The approved plan will become effective in also allows Berkeley County to hire paid firefighters who’ll begin working Feb. 2019.
