Shepherdstown man on converting school buses to homes

West Virginia

Will Sutherland takes school buses and converts them into tiny dwellings or, as he likes to call them, skoolies.

“Similar to a tiny home, but it’s on wheels and they’re all metal and very sturdy,” said Will.

Now Will has been making skoolies since 2014, and he has been able to make a profit out of them by putting them up on Airbnb.

And since he started, he has converted three other buses. In fact, a publisher reached out to Will and gave him a book deal to write about skoolies.

“When you go and look at the turn-key price for a tiny home, it can still cost almost as much as a regular sized home,” said Will. “And my goal with the book is to introduce a reasonable way to achieve a tiny house with a school bus without the extremely high price.”

According to Will, he thinks many people can benefit from a skoolie, whether they’re always travelling or just want a place to call their own.
