School board recognizes certified teachers

West Virginia

Berkeley County Schools honored 10 teachers on Monday for passing their National Board Certifications.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards was established in 1987 in order to maintain a high set of standards for accomplished teachers. And according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, only three percent of the nation’s teachers are certified.

Following these recent certifications, Berkeley County Schools has the most certified teachers in West Virginia at 107.

“Teachers that are National Board Certified teachers have higher test scores. Districts with National Board Certified teachers have better retention and collaboration,” said Anne Laskey, the National Board Coordinator. “It’s your highest of high teachers that we hold ourselves to standards. You’re just the best of the best.”

Of those honored on Monday, six were newly certified teachers and four were re-certified teachers.
