A pedestrian was struck by a train and taken to a hospital early Thursday morning in Berkeley County.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to the area of Variform Drive and the Route 9 bypass railroad crossings in Martinsburg.
According to Sheriff Curtis Keller, a CSX employee flagged down a deputy. The pedestrian, identified as Ricky Roper, of Martinsburg had severe injuries to both of his legs.
He was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Preliminary investigation shows that Roper was trespassing on railroad property and was trying to cut across in between two railroad cars when the train was stationary.
While Roper was crossing between the cars, the train began to move, and resulted in his injuries.
The train conductor will not be charged, according to officials.
Deputies determined that Roper was highly intoxicated at the time, and that he just was released from jail.
