An inmate who escaped en route to West Virginia from Florida has been apprehended.

According to West Virginia State Police, troopers received a tip from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, saying Eric Johnston was hiding in the 900 block of Trinity Church Road in Martinsburg. State troopers arrived at the residence and arrested Johnston around 3:10 a.m. on December 21.

Johnston was originally being transported to West Virginia by Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies after failing to register as a sex offender in West Virginia. Amid transportation, Johnston escaped at a gas station in Frederick County, Virginia.

“As we were speaking to the individuals inside, Mr. Johnston fled out the back and was apprehended by another trooper. He was subsequently arrested for fleeing. The two individuals that were concealing him in the residence were also arrested,” said Senior Trooper David Gough of the West Virginia State Police.

Darren Riggs and Mandy Malott of Martinsburg were arrested for concealing Johnston and charged with accessory after the fact and false information.
