The Hollywood Casino in Charles Town was buzzing with excitement on Saturday. The company launched its sports betting program just two days after their soft opening.
“Sports betting on a grand scale seemed to always be in Nevada,” said Scott Saunders, Vice President and General Manager. “I was always resigned to the fact that’s the way it was going to be and when this changed, it just changed the scope of what we were going to do.”
West Virginia follows Mississippi, New jersey, Delaware and Nevada to legalize sports betting.
This was a historic occasion with supporters such as former Washington Redskin Quarterback Joe Theismann.
“I appreciate what the Supreme Court has done,” said Theismann. “I think they made a good decision to be able to legalize the opportunity to be able to bet on their favorite teams.”
Lawmakers say it took around nine months to get the program up and running at the casino.
“It’s a record time of frame for being to get something done and this is something that people are paying attention to,” said Senator Criag Blair, (R- Berkeley). “But in reality we’ve got many things in West Virginia that we’re fixing at the same rate of speed.”
The Hollywood Casino says an app for placing bets will be launched mid-September of this year.
