It was the grand opening on Wednesday for the newly-remodeled Hobby Shop at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center, now known as the Healing Arts Center.
Officials say the name change came from a fellow veteran who thought it would be a good idea to include “healing” in the title. The center allows veterans to make any kind of artwork, and all of the creations in the center were made by veterans. Staff at the VA say the center is important, because art can be therapeutic for veterans.
“I see them come in, and they would be very quiet. Not want to do a thing, and they’re just kind of here. And sometimes, if you’re just here, you just absorb the atmosphere because the other veterans are definitely helpful. It’s veterans helping veterans,” said Recreation Therapy Assistant at the Healing Arts Center, Dawn Johns.
The center is available seven days a week. Veterans are required to have a doctor’s approval to utilize the services.
