Giving on Tuesday to stop domestic violence

News

One charity in the Eastern Panhandle is using Giving Tuesday to help those affected by domestic violence.

Community Alternatives to Violence is a privately-funded charity organization that looks to end domestic violence within the Eastern Panhandle.

Donations are their only source of funds, which is why they see Giving Tuesday as such a blessing.

CAV not only helps victims of domestic violence, but also reforms perpetrators of the criminal act through a 32-week course.

“It takes 32 weeks to change the thinking and the belief system of perpetrators. They are required to pay for each class as part of their personal accountability,” said CAV Treasurer, Michael Bochinski, “but because it’s on a sliding income scale, that doesn’t always cover our operating expenses.”

Out of the people who undergo the extensive course, only about three percent return to the court system for domestic violence charges.
