Berkeley Spring’s ‘bird man’ is known for his little feathery friend, but the bond between the two almost never happened.
Berkeley Springs resident Jack Meyers walks through town with his blue and gold macaw Opie. While it might sound weird, it is not an usual sighting for the residents in the area.
Meyers rescued the parrot back in 2006 when his wife passed away. He says Opie was mistreated and so stressed out that he lost most of his feathers by the time he took him in as a pet.
“I’ll go back to lay down. He’ll come back the hallway and sit down on me,” said Meyers.
Meyers is a Korean and Vietnam war veteran. He says Opie is not only his trusted companion, but also helps him emotionally. They have formed an unbreakable bond.
