Applications are now open for the 2019 Junior Police Academy, hosted by the Martinsburg Police Department.

The vision for this program is to teach children about policing, and the daily challenges police officers face while serving the community.

The age group for this academy will be fifth through seventh grade with, different schools in the police department’s jurisdiction. The lead instructor for this academy says he worked for months developing this program and explains some of what kids participating in it will experience.

“We will have a lot of different demonstrations, the Eastern Regional Jail is going to come, the Martinsburg Fire Department is going to have a huge part in this as well. We’ll have a K-9 demonstration, as well as a demonstration on vehicle stops. Detectives are going to come in and give a presentation on forensics, and we’ll talk about bullying and being a role model,” Corporal J.D. Luciano, Martinsburg Police Department.

The academy will have two sessions in June and August.
