A Winchester Police Officer is on administrative leave, after shooting at a suicidal man early Wednesday morning.

the 2-year veteran responded around 1 a.m. to Tower Avenue, for a report of a suicidal man with a gun.

When the officer arrived, the man was outside his home with a handgun in his waistband. Police say the man was initially compliant with the officer, but became agitated and reached for the gun.

“Suddenly, he reached towards his waistband and the officer shot at the male. He was not struck but at that point he became compliant and was taken into custody without any further incident,” Amanda Behan of Winchester Police said.

Virginia State Police are conducting an investigation at the police department’s request. The man involved was transported to Winchester Medical Center for a mental health evaluation. No injuries were reported.
