Wednesday said to be busiest day for post-holiday travel

More from Northern Virginia

According to AAA, today is the busiest day for post-holiday travelers so if you’re returning from a Christmas break be sure to pack your patience.

Officials say more than one third of Americans will travel this holiday season. A study of flight booking data shows that most holiday air travelers return the day after Christmas but as a result of cheaper gas prices, AAA says 102 million people packed up their cars and hit the road instead of buying a plane ticket. So whether you’re hitting the road or flying today, make sure you are prepared.

“It’s been a rush this morning but so far the traffic hasn’t been bad an all is going well,” said Terri G, who was traveling to Pittsburgh.

“We had three long driving trips last summer one of which was to here so we’re happy to fly this time,” said Phil Dunmire, who was traveling to East Florida.

For those traveling through Virginia officials say it’s best to avoid I-95 South.
