Visit Alexandria is “open for business” and offering special deals for furloughed workers

Virginia

Visit Alexandria, the tourism and marketing office for Historic Alexandria, is promoting special offers for furloughed employees.

During the duration of the shutdown, workers will be offered Key to the City museum passes, valued at $44, but free of charge. Deals include free admission to Historic Alexandria’s nine museums and a 40 percent discount to George Washington’s Mount Vernon.

Visit Alexandria had given out more than 260 passes as of noon on January 15.

“We thought this was something we could do to support federal workers and also to say to visitors that we’re open for business and there’s so many things to do,” said Patricia Washington, president and CEO of Visit Alexandria.

Alexandria’s restaurants have also taken part in the offer, from 20 to 30 percent discounts on meals, to a free chocolate bar or cupcake. Hampton Inn & Suites is also offering discounts for overnight stays.
