A stretch of Interstate 81 in Frederick County could be seeing much needed improvements soon.

The Virginia Department of Transportation and the 81 improvement project have identified over 100 projects that they consider needing immediate attention.

The section of I-81 between the county’s exit 313 Millwood Pike to exit 317 Martinsburg Pike are among them.

The I-81 improvement plan assessed the need with the help of 12 meetings and over 2,000 comments from the public. The department will recommend widening the interstate by adding a lane going each way, in order to improve safety and congestion.

“We’ve heard from them, we’ve heard from local law enforcement in Frederick County, and Winchester, we’ve heard from the state police — and we hope that the recommendations that we’ve put into place will make the situation better for the residents in that area,” Ben Mannell of VDOT said.

The department will present the improvement recommendations to the commonwealth transportation board on Tuesday.
