UPDATE: Officials say they have taken Eric Johnston into custody in West Virginia on Friday morning.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Johnston was captured by West Virginia State Police in Martinsburg just before 4 am.
Authorities are searching for an escaped inmate in Frederick County, Va. who they say is to be considered dangerous.
Eric Toland Johnston was being transported from Florida to West Virginia, where he failed to register as a sex offender, on Thursday around 1 a.m. He ran from Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies at the Sunoco gas station at 1832 Berryville Pike.
Jefferson County Sheriff Pete Dougherty says Johnston has an extensive criminal history, including a felony conviction for domestic violence. He is also wanted in multiple West Virginia jurisdictions for several misdemeanors.
According to the gas station clerk, deputies had stopped so Johnston could use the restroom. But when a deputy open the door for Johnston, he struck the deputy and took off toward a trailer park behind the gas station on Eckard Circle.
Johnston is described as being six feet tall, about 200 lbs. He has blue eyes, is bald, and has a number of tattoos, including a Playboy bunny tattooed on the side of his neck.
Frederick County Sheriff Lenny Millholland says multiple jurisdictions are helping with the search, including Fairfax County’s helicopter, but there’s been little sign of Johnston.
Authorities ask if you have any information about Johnston’s whereabouts that you call 911, or the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 304-728-3205 or the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office at 540-662-6168.
