A 16-year-old is facing charges after a gun went off inside a high school classroom on Tuesday.
Police say they began an investigation at Hylton High School in Woodbridge, Virginia, on reports of an unknown noise inside an arts classroom around noon on Tuesday.
Later on it was determined that a student brought a weapon on school grounds that was discharged. Students were held in the school until about 5 p.m. when police located the weapon in a separate room.
Minor damage was discovered on a trash bin and the ceiling, but no injuries were reported.
“We believe that he was basically showing off the weapon. We don’t know why he brought the weapon to school, that wasn’t really clear. We don’t believe that there are any sort of threats involved at this time but our investigation is continuing,” Sgt. Jonathan Perok, spokesperson for Prince William County Police Department said.
The teen, who cannot be identified because of his age, has been charged with possession of a firearm on school property. He’s being held at the juvenile detention center.
