Senator Tim Kaine reacts to U.S. and Russian president exchange

Virginia

In the midst of the president’s meeting with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, lawmakers are reacting around the country, including U.S. senator Tim Kaine.

At the 2018 Helsinki summit, President Trump’s critics were outraged at his interactions with the Russian president on the global stage, while some of his supporters applauded his bold approach to international diplomacy. Kaine say he believes there is a need for the country to defend Americans against attack, protect our nation’s values and stand with American allies.

“The Helsinki summit was a real disaster. To refuse to call him out for Russia’s interference with the American election in 2016 and even suggest that he accepted president Putin’s denials more than he accepted the hard work of the American intelligence community, which is composed of so many patriotic Americans, many of whom live in Virginia,” said Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA).

Trump said at his joint press conference in Helsinki, “I would rather take a political risk in pursuit of peace than to risk peace in pursuit of politics.”
