This month marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month and a martial arts studio in Manassas is teaching women how to defend themselves.
On Friday night, owner of Premier Martial Arts, Tim Rook, offered a free self-defense class for women. During the workshop, they went through real life situations including what to do if you’re being attacked on the ground, how to take an attacker down, and what to do if an attacker is charging at you.
“Self-defense is something everyone should learn how to do it’s kinda like a learning how to swim, when the boats going down you don’t wanna figure out how to swim in the water,” Rook said.
The two hour class was filled with women of all ages. Some of them say they are being proactive, and others say they attended the workshop because of past experiences.
“I think there’s a lot of bad stuff happening. The world is turning a bit scary especially when you’re a mom so I’d like to learn and get my kids involved in this stuff,” said Vanessa Polk.
“One time I think I was in the grocery store and I was alone with my friends and I didn’t know what to do,” workshop participant Lillianna McCloy said.
Premier Martial Arts also offers regular self-defense classes for their members.
