Old Town to permanently dock 18th century tall ship

Virginia

From time to time, Alexandria hosts 17th to 19th century ships in its Old Town harbor and an 18th century ship will soon be there to stay.

A local restaurant owner noticed a spike in business when such ships were docked nearby. Two years ago he started the Tall Ship Providence Foundation to permanently dock a tall ship in Old Town’s waterfront.

The ship, damaged in a 2015 storm, has been restored to its 18th century appearance, thanks to donations from community members and social investment bonds.

Director of Programs and Communications Diana West says while the ship will dock in June, tours won’t begin until mid-July.

“The best thing about the history is bringing it to the people so I think people are going to love coming on our ship and hearing what life was like in the continental navy,” said West.

Besides regular tours on deck, the ship will also set sail. West says on the ship will offer a craft beer cruise on Fridays and adult pirate cruises or sunset sails on Saturdays.
