Prior to the opening of their new sensory gym, Shenandoah SOUNDstart offered pediatric speech, language and occupational therapy. With the expansion, they will be adding physical therapy to their practice.
“A lot of kids who need occupational therapy, need physical therapy as well. So it’s also just convenient. A lot of times they’re having to drive to another facility sometimes not even in Winchester. We have families driving far to get physical therapy,” said SOUNDstart owner Carrie Lopez.
The gym provides a space where older children can work on improving their gross motor skills.
“We have the climbing wall and we’re working on strengthening but it’s also working on some of that sensory integration and sensory input which helps with some of the participation and attention,” said occupational therapist Allysa Welsh.
Carrie says she decided to build this gym to meet the needs of her current and future patients after seeing a lack of pediatric therapy in Winchester. Now families can go to one place to get all of their therapy during the week.
“Now we have more options and more play and we can go to different rooms and we can keep things new and exciting,” said Welsh.
Shenandoah SOUNDstart is hiring an additional occupational therapist and a physical therapist to join their practice and their team.
