Music teacher arrested for sexually abusing minors, police concerned for more victims

Virginia

Jeffrey Cummins, 56, was returning home from an international flight on Tuesday afternoon when he was arrested by Fairfax County Police at Dulles International Airport.

Detectives allege the Annandale music teacher sexually abused two former students while they were minors. The police department fears there are more victims.

Cummins has been a private music teacher for 39 years. He gives lessons at his home. Police say he is the founder of a traveling music group for school-aged children called Virginia Music Adventures. He’s also an instructor at two Huntington Learning Centers.

The investigation began in May of 2018 when a former student accused Cummins of abuse. Captain Thea Pirnat says they presented the case to the commonwealth, but didn’t charge Cummins because of lack of evidence.

In January, a second victim came forward. “When we had a second victim that came forward independently and corroborated the same thing the first victim was saying, it made it a stronger case. That’s why we moved forward with the charges when we did,” said Pirnat.

Cummins was released after his arraignment.
