Lyft offers free rides for residents celebrating Cinco De Mayo

Virginia

With Cinco De Mayo just days away, local law enforcement is teaming up with a rideshare company to make sure those celebrating get home safely.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration, nearly one-third of all U.S. traffic deaths involve drunk drivers. To deter impaired driving throughout the region, Lyft will offer free sober rides to area residents that are 21 and older. Riders can simply enter the sober-ride code in the app’s promo section to receive a ride equivalent up to $15 at no cost.

“In 2017 448 fatalities occurred for drunk driving. We don’t want anyone out there drinking and driving we want you guys to go out have fun, have a good time but go home safely,” Corporal Tatiana Hernandez with the Arlington County Police Department said.

The promo code will be posted at 3 p.m. on Sunday and will be available from 4 p.m. that day until 4 a.m. Monday morning.
