League of Women Voters trains 200 people

Virginia

The Arlington League of Women Voters and the Virginia Department of Elections trained about 200 people in voter registration Thursday evening in Arlington.

The League of Women Voters has been around since 1920. While it originally exclusively worked to register women to vote, today it encourages everyone to vote. The Arlington chapter has been in the county since the 1940’s. The league is nonpartisan — it takes positions on issues but it does not endorse candidates.

“We have the role to empower voters and defend democracy,” said Joane Porte, president of the league’s Arlington chapter, “Democracy dies when we are not active.”

This is the second voter registration session the league has hosted. Thursday evening’s session focused on registering third party voters.
