The Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development is opening the waitlist for its Housing Choice Voucher Program for the first time in over 10 years.

Applications for the federal program for low and moderate-income families, seniors, and the disabled will open January 29 to February 4.

“Being able to pick and choose a home that you would like to live in is a really big deal to a lot of people because we have a lot of families that remain in a certain school district, where they live, where they work, their house of worship,” said Director of Public Affairs Ashley Montgomery. “And we recognize that.”

The department had to close the waitlist in 2007, after it was met with a waitlist of over 10,000 people.

Now, the program has 2,000 slots, filled by random selection. Applicants may apply online or in person at any time over the course of the application period.
