House fire in Alexandria kills one woman, injures one man

Virginia

An Alexandria woman is dead, and her husband is fighting for his life after a house fire early Wednesday morning.

Fire marshals say the couple was inside their home on South Pitts Street when the fire started around 12:30.

When they arrived, firefighters found flames coming from the second-floor bedroom window.

One man, who was suffering from smoke inhalation, was taken to the hospital.

A woman in her 70’s was found in the bedroom and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the fire was caused by an electrical cord.

“An electrical cord that ran behind the bed. There was a malfunction in the cord which resulted in igniting the bed and bedding materials which then communicated to readily available combustibles,” Deputy Marshal Andrea Buchanan with the City of Alexandria Fire Department said.

The man who was taken to the hospital remains in critical condition.
