Front Royal one step closer to lowering its electricity bills by going solar

News

According to the American Public Power Association, Front Royal has had the lowest electricity rates throughout the Commonwealth for the past three years, and town officials say their working on making those rates even lower.

Front Royal Town Manager, Steven Burke says a solar field will be built within town limits. He says its purpose is to generate power to all Front Royal customers. He says the town will be pulling two and a half to three megawatts of power from the solar field to fulfill the needs of the town each day.

“We hope that we will continue to be very competitive, and hopefully remain the lowest rates in the Commonwealth,” said Front Royal Town Manager, Steven Burke.

Burke says the town of Front Royal has been working with American Municipal Power to secure partial ownership in various electric generation facilities.

“AMP is working with a company called Nextera, and Nextera will actually be owning and operating the site on town property that we are leasing to them, and through amp we will be purchasing that electricity from Nextera,” said Burke.

Burke says by doing this, not only will the town save more money, residents will too…all while providing  environmentally safe power to citizens.

“I love it; I’ve seen some savings last year that was really phenomenal. I was surprised that when you run your electric for ac that my bill was really extremely low. My lowest bill was $22.00,” said Front Royal Resident, Mike Mclean.

“The town will be able to be purchasing this power for about 75 % on average cost of what we are currently purchasing from the open market,” added Burke.

Burke says the solar field is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and will help generate power to the town for the next 20 years.

“There is no cost to the town for the construction of the solar field; we are simply committing to purchasing all of the power generated,” said Burke.

Burke says council will be considering the agreement and property lease at the next council meeting on March 14th. The meeting will be held at 7:00 pm at the County of Warren Government Center.
