Warren County Public Schools realize providing breakfast and lunch money to children everyday can be a challenge, especially for low income families.
Starting in September, the school system will implement the Community Eligibility Provision lunch program. Approved by the Virginia Department of Education, the program will allow any E.Wilson Morrison elementary school student to receive a free breakfast and lunch regardless of their parent’s income. The federal-funded program was designed to benefit schools like E.Wilson Morrison which has the highest free and reduced lunch population in the county.
“It could save a parent upwards of twenty dollars a week, so if you multiply that by the number of weeks that we’re in school, it’s a significant savings for parents and to know that they’re going to receive a healthy breakfast and a healthy lunch, that meets all of the state requirements and federal requirements, is very important.” WCPS assistant superintendent Melody Sheppard says.
The school system also hopes to implement the program in other county schools.
