Over 60 roosters were rescued from a suspected animal fighting operation in Edinburg, Va. on Tuesday.

According to the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office, the roosters were found tied to barrels and in cages in the backyard of a Barbershop Road residence. Deputies also found a small methamphetamine laboratory on the property.

Jesus Lagunilla, 49, was charged with both felony and misdemeanor counts of animal fighting, while his girlfriend Tiffany Adkins was arrested for violating her bond agreement.

Neighbors say Lagunilla has lived at the residence since the early 1990’s and that they have repeatedly contacted law enforcement over concerns about the birds.

Lagunilla is being held at the Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren Regional Jail without bond.

Drug charges for both individuals are still pending.
