Dept. of Environmental Services distributes reusable straws to county employees

Virginia

The Arlington Department of Environmental Services is in charge of waste management in the county and it says plastic straws can’t be recycled.

This week is Public Service Recognition Week, and Arlington County employees will be celebrating with their new, reusable steel straws, distributed by the City Manager’s Office as a thank you for their hard work.

This effort is riding the wave of plastic straw bans around the country — a move the county can’t make for itself (also known as the Dillon Rule).

“We are a dual-enrolled [county], which means we need explicit instructions from the state legislature in order to ban anything,” said Shani Kruljac, operations management for the Arlington County Solid Waste Bureau.

National Geographic reports 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute beaches worldwide.
