Campaign urges the community to double check loads of trash

Virginia

“If you love our roads, secure your load” is the message officials from Frederick County, Virginia, are trying to spread with their new campaign .

As of June, Frederick County is striving to heighten awareness about the importance of securing waste loads heading to landfills and citizens’ convenience centers.

Officials said the county collects over 50,000 pounds of trash from roads each year. Waste management specialists say litter could potentially lead to auto accidents.

“There’s always gonna be litter and we understand that, but an even more important part of any litter program is prevention,” said County solid waste manager Gloria Puffinburger, “that’s what this element is adding, secure your load adds that element.”

An often-overlooked consequence of litter is the harmful impact, according to waste management officials. It has on property values and community pride.
