Looking for a purr-fect holiday deal? You can’t find one much better than free.
Or at least, that’s what volunteers at the Humane Society of Warren County are hoping.
The humane society is holding its annual Black Furday Special, declaring all animals with black fur eligible to be discounted.
“Black Furday applies to cats and dogs,” said Sue Wagoner, the shelter’s community engagement specialist and volunteer coordinator. “If they have any black fur on them anywhere, their adoption fee is waived.”
Normally, the adoption fee for cats is $15.00 and the fee for dogs is $30.00. However, the special does not impact the cost of spaying and neutering animals.
Perhaps because of superstitions or simply because of their appearances, animals with black fur often are harder to place in a home.
“I personally love black cats, I think they’re like little mini panthers,” said Wagoner. “A lot of times we’re inundated — with kitten season — with black kittens and a lot of them get to be a little older before they’re adopted at the shelter.”
Although the shelter volunteers brought over a dozen cats to the Front Royal Petco, the sale extends to animals at the Humane Society too, where non-black animals are half-priced.
Two brown dogs at the shelter in particular are looking for a home. Ginger, a Vizla/German Shepherd mix was recently adopted, but brought back to the shelter because the owner’s housing arrangements changed. Meanwhile, Sweet Pea, a brown pitbull mix, has been passed over for several months as well.
Volunteers are hoping to get these animals into a home, not just for the animals, but also for spacing.
“We’re full,” said Wagoner. The shelter’s capacity is “probably at least 200,” she adds.
The shelter is continuing the Black Furday special until Saturday November 24. Cats and kittens will be at Petco from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
