It is known as the “most wonderful time of the year,” and the Fairfax County Health Department is working to keep it that way; offering tips for a safe, healthy and happy holiday meal. Because, no wants food poisoning for Christmas.
The Fairfax County Health Department says the four food safety tips to remember are “clean, separate, cook and chill.”
Before you “get cooking,” the department suggests cleaning surfaces with a bleach solution.
The department suggests using different cutting boards, to minimize the risk of cross contamination while preparing meats. The department urges the public to be mindful of the various temperatures different types of meat should reach, and to use a calibrated thermometer. Once meat is cooked, the department suggests leaving it in a heated, or chilled environment.
As for beverages — the department suggests only using pasteurized egg product for eggnog, and only drinking pasteurized cider.
