In 1998, Bill Clinton was president, Microsoft became the biggest company in the world, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was published.
The Ashburn Ice House also opened, becoming the first ice skating rink in Loudoun County.
“Our first public skate was sold out completely,” said Director of Finance Vanessa Smingler, who has been working with Ashburn Ice House for over 20 years. She recalls accounting in the founder’s basement before the ice rink was built.
Smingler says the secret sauce has been keeping the business open seven days a week, for about 20 hours a day. “The key to our success is keeping all those people in the building as much as possible,” said Smingler.
General Manager Rob Lorenzen says it’s also thanks to Ashburn Ice House’s warmer temperatures — a more comfortable setting for spectators in the bleachers.”I often say it’s like a science project, just keeping the ice in pristine condition,” said Lorenzen, who reports the room temperature reaches about 60 degrees.
