Arlington’s Jefferson Davis Highway gets a name change

Virginia

After numerous requests by the Arlington County Board, the Commonwealth Transportation Board voted Wednesday to change the name of Jefferson Davis Highway.

The name of Jefferson Davis Highway will be changed to Richmond Highway which will be the same exact name that Alexandria and Fairfax County have on that road.

A big part of the name change is that it will be easier for drivers since the road will carry the same name from Fort Belvoir to the Potomac. Arlington County Board Chair Christian Dorsey says on top of the ease for drivers, the name Jefferson Davis doesn’t represent Virginia.

“In the early 1920s in an effort to restore white supremacy there was this movement to name the southern highway after Jefferson Davis, and there is no reason why people who live here now should have a road bearing the name of someone who was completely contrary of our modern principles,” said Christian Dorsey, Arlington County Board Chair.

Jefferson Davis Highway’s name will officially be changed in the fall.
