As part of its 2019 legislative package, Arlington County Board members are asking the Virginia General Assembly for permission to rename Arlington’s portion of ‘Jefferson Davis Highway,’ to ‘Richmond Highway.’

Replacing the confederate namesake with ‘Richmond Highway,’ would sync Arlington’s portion of the highway, with the new name Alexandria recently gave its portion of the highway.

Under Virginia law, Alexandria is able to rename its portion of the highway. However, Arlington has to seek permission from the general assembly.
