Arlington church goes green with new solar panels

Virginia

The Diocese of Arlington’s Our Lady Queen of Peace church is getting greener, largely in response to Pope Francis’ encyclical, “Care for our Common Home.”

Since its founding, the church’s Integrity of Creation team has accomplished many things to make the church eco-friendly. They offer weekly eco-tips in the bulletin for people to reduce their carbon footprint at home. They’ve also renovated the building using recycled products on things like carpeting which is made from 99% drinking bottles. The pastor of the church said moral and ethical reasons also played a part in their green transition.

“It’s about what are we going to leave being for our grandchildren and our grandchildren’s grandchildren. What kind of Earth are we going to be leaving them?” Father Tim Hickey asked.

Over the weekend, the church installed 319 solar panels, becoming the first and currently the only parish in the diocese with solar panels.
