According to the Arlington Department of Environmental Services, some 72,000 tons of salt were used to treat Arlington roadways on Thursday.
Thursday’s snow was the first since the county attempted to relocate its salt from its rusted 90-year-old salt dome to an interim storage structure on Old Dominion Drive.
The county says the structure contains 60 percent of Arlington’s stockpiled salt. Inspections revealed the structure may be unsafe to use.
The Arlington County Board has proposed demolishing the old dome, and constructing a 47-foot-high temporary shelter next to the existing dome — a project that would require rezoning.
