ARFF training under way in Manassas

This week, the Manassas Fire Department is completing its Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Training (ARFF).

The Virginia Department of Fire Programs travels around the commonwealth for the week-long program.

The program includes putting out fires that can get as hot as 800 degrees in a mock airplane. The training is required of all airports with commercial flights.

The City of Manassas only flies private airplanes, but it volunteered to participate in the program.

“This is not a requirement for us, but we feel [that] here in Manassas this is very important to us…to be prepared the same as we are prepared for EMS calls,” said Todd Lupton, Deputy Fire Chief of Manassas FD.

The Department of Fire Programs estimates it burns 1,300 gallons of propane in a week.
