Alexandria hosts Drug Take Back Day

Saturday, the city of Alexandria hosted its Drug Take Back Day, a quarterly effort to combat the opioid epidemic officials say is worsening in the area.

Mayor Allison Silberberg kicked off the event this morning in Del Ray outside the city’s only permanent drop box for unused prescription drugs. The city was joined by the nonprofit S.A.F.E. (Stop the Addiction Fatality Epidemic).

According to the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office, so far this year, 50 Alexandria residents have overdosed. Seven of those cases were fatal.

“The fewer drugs that are in homes means the fewer drugs that people have access to,” said Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, “Which would then hopefully lead to fewer addictions and fewer overdoses and fewer people coming to my detention center.”

As of 3 pm Saturday, Alexandria “took back” three full garbage bags of prescription drugs.
