The Allegany County Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) is now investigating a murder after it was initially called a suspicious death.
Cumberland police and fire officials responded to a residence on the 1200 block of Oldtown Rd. just after 8:45 a.m. Thursday for a report of an unconscious person.
That’s where they found a woman, identified as Jasmine Rannells, 32, dead inside home. Officers say they noticed obvious trauma to her head. C3I was requested to help investigate.
A search warrant for the residence was secured, and the scene was processed by evidence collection technicians with the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division.
Investigators interviewed numerous witnesses, including the victim’s boyfriend. Through those interviews and physical evidence collected at the scene, investigators believe the boyfriend, Kevin Bowers, 43, is responsible.
They charged Bowers with 2nd-degree murder.
He’s being held at the Allegany County Detention Center on a $1-million bond pending his next court appearance.
The victim’s body is being taken to the Maryland State Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine an exact cause of death.
This investigation is on-going.
