The 14-month-old boy who was hospitalized from injuries that police believe stemmed from child neglect has passed away.
The child was pronounced dead at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., just after 4:15 p.m. on Saturday. He had suffered severe burns, which covered the majority of his body.
Michael McKinley, 29, of Hedgesville, was arrested by troopers from West Virginia State Police on Thursday in connection to the boy’s injuries. He has now been rebooked on charges of child abuse resulting in death, and is being held at the Eastern Regional Jail on a $250,000 bond.
Troopers said he tried to bathe the child in scalding hot water, causing the burn injuries.
On Thursday afternoon, they responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Mountain Lake Road and Audubon Road, just after 4 p.m. One of the vehicles was taking the 14-month-old boy to the hospital for his burns – following the crash, the child was taken to the Trauma and Burn Unit at Children’s National Medical Center.
McKinley was originally held on a $20,000 bond, prior to the boy’s death.
