The Maryland State Police and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an incident regarding a man arrested for an ongoing theft scheme and allegedly assaulting an officer.
According to the Maryland State Police, Hagerstown Target employees reported the 26-year-old Melsun S. Perry of Landover to the police on Jan. 10.
In a press release, officials stated the suspect was known to travel to Target stores and return previously purchased iPads. When returning the iPad, the box was filled with other items of equal weight.
The suspect fled when police arrived. A second officer came to assist, but Perry continued to flee.
“Perry accelerates his vehicle directly into the travel portion of the deputy who was responding to assist… The initial deputy fires shot at the suspect’s vehicle. Perry hits the marked vehicle, he hits another vehicle that was there …then actually flees from the scene, ” said Sgt. Da’Vaughn Parker of the Maryland State Police.
Perry was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, theft less than $1,500 and theft scheme less than $1,500.
