Wednesday night and the lights were low, but residents at Holly Place knew exactly where to go.
“My god! I’m dying for another one,” Holly Place resident, Virginia Snider said.
Residents do not typically get a chance to dance, but they were all Dancing Queens at a preview event for another dance happening later in the month.
“Fantastic crowd, beautiful music, I’m with my friends and my family,” Resident, Willie Wachs said.
Executive director of Holly Place, Melanie Davis, said all of the proceeds raised from the dance and silent auction on March 25th will go towards paying for residents housing.
“We take in everyone here for what they can afford to pay each month. It costs us $3,300 dollars a month to operate per person,” Davis said. “Some of these people only have $500 dollars a month, so we have to come up with the difference.”
Beyond the dance floor, residents said they would be lost without the help from Holly Place.
“I was on the road not knowing where I’d go next and they took me in,” Resident, Faye Gofferd said.
Some of these seniors are fighting off diseases like Alzheimer’s, dementia, and diabetes.
Davis said some would be homeless without their services.
Years ago, one person was dropped off on the side of a highway by a family member.
“When they found out they didn’t get a check big enough to satisfy them, they dropped them off on the interstate. They said, ‘I’m not caring for you.’ So we took them in for what they had and they were wonderful. It breaks my heart,” Davis said.
However, on Wednesday night, the only thing these seniors were fighting off was the jitter bug.
“This place is my refuge. It’s my new life. I was born again when I came here,” Wachs said.
On Saturday, March 25th organizers hope to raise $10,000 dollars to go towards seniors living at Holly Place.
You can get in on the fun at the Women’s Club in Hagerstown from 7-11 that night.
