PennDOT study expects I-81 expansion to cost $2.9 billion

Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation unveiled a new study that would require billions of dollars to be put towards an I-81 expansion near Pennsylvania.

PennDOT officials suggest in order to receive an expansion to interstate 81, they would need approximately $2.9 billion to do it.

The idea of the project is to remove the grassy median between the lanes and widen each side, therefore having six lanes instead of four.

Elliott Schooley who works the Mason Dixon Auto Auction Service, has a front row seat of the interstate believes the project would improve traffic flow.

“Well I think that’d be a great idea especially for exit five, if you get down to the afternoon rush about five o’clock you can’t even get off that exit,” said Schooley.

Nothing is set in stone however, the possible expansion would stretch for over 80 miles.
