Multiple injuries after explosion at Letterkenny Army Depot

Pennsylvania

Four people were injured after an explosion on Thursday morning at Letterkenny Army Depot in Franklin County.

Col. Stephen Ledbetter, commander of the depot, said the explosion happened in the paint area of Building 350 around 7:15 a.m. Multiple fire crews responded to the scene.

Three of those injured were flown out by helicopter to Baltimore-area hospitals, while the fourth person was transported via ambulance for injuries.

Col. Ledbetter said those patients who were airlifted sustained injuries he would “classify as serious.” The workers’ families have been notified.

More than 300 workers were evacuated. Other employees were told to remain in their work areas until further notice.

“The fire was contained and we have 100 percent accountability of our workforce,” Col. Ledbetter said.

At this moment, Col. Ledbetter says they do not know what caused the explosion, but they add there is “no suspicion of terrorist activity.”

Authorities are continuing to investigate. Another press conference will be held at 1 p.m.
